If you prefer video tutorials, check out my YouTube video on making scrunchies, where I go over all the steps visually.
What You’ll Need:
Before we dive into the tutorial, gather these materials:
- Fabric: You’ll need about 4 x 36inch or 10 x 92cm of fabric (satin works great, but you can use silk, cotton, or any other fabric of your choice).
- Elastic: 6 inches of elastic (depending on your wrist or hair size).
- Scissors: For cutting the fabric and elastic.
- Pins or Fabric Clips: To hold everything in place while you sew.
- Sewing Machine or Needle and Thread: If you’re using a sewing machine, it’s super quick. Otherwise, you can hand-sew it.
- Safety Pin (optional): To help turn the fabric tube inside out.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make an Regular Scrunchie
Start by cutting your fabric into a strip that measures 36 inches or 92 cm long and 4 inches or 10 cm wide. This size works great for most scrunchies, but you can adjust the length if you want a bigger or smaller scrunchie.
Step 2: Prepare the Fabric
Fold the fabric in half, short sides together, lengthwise. Pin the edges to keep them aligned. Sew the short edge with a ¼-inch or 1 cm seam allowance, leaving the small space on the centre.
Step 3: Fold the Fabric
Lay the fabric flat on the table.
Fold one side of the fabric towards the center .
Fold the other side in the same way, meeting the first fold.
Now, fold the lower edge up to meet the upper edge, so the fabric is like a long rectangle with both sides tucked in.
Step 4: Sew the Long Edge
Pin the fabric together if needed.
Sew along the long edge (where the folds meet),about a 1/4-inch or 1 cm seam.
Step 5: Turn the Fabric Tube
Turn the tube from the short side and from the opening you left previously.
Step 6: Add Elastic
Cut a piece of elastic 7 inches or 17 cm, and thread it through the tube using a safety pin.
Sew the ends of the elastic together.
Step 7: Close the Scrunchie
Close the opening where you inserted the elastic using a hidden stitch, your Regular scrunchie is complete! Give it a little fluff to help it gather and scrunch up. Pop it around your wrist, or gather your hair into a ponytail for a fun and stylish look.
Scrunchie Styling Tips
Now that you know how to make your own scrunchies, here are a few fun ways to style them:
- Hair Accessories: Wear them on your wrist or in your hair for a casual, cute look. Mix and match colors and fabrics for extra flair.
- Gift Ideas: Scrunchies make amazing DIY gifts for friends and family. Customize them with different fabrics like florals, stripes, or even sparkly materials for special occasions.
- Sewing with Kids: Scrunchies are a great beginner project for younger crafters. You can make mini scrunchies for children or use fun fabrics like character prints.
Fabric Ideas for Scrunchies
Choosing the right fabric can totally change the look of your scrunchie. Here are a few fabric ideas that work perfectly for scrunchies:
- Cotton: Ideal for everyday scrunchies, cotton fabrics are easy to work with and come in endless prints, from florals to stripes.
- Velvet: For a luxe look, velvet scrunchies add texture and a rich finish to your hair accessories.
- Silk: Silk is great for reducing frizz and adding a bit of elegance to your look. Perfect for evening wear or special occasions!
- Denim: Go for a more casual, edgy vibe with denim fabric. A classic and trendy option!
Scrunchie Variations
Once you’re comfortable with making the basic scrunchie, there are so many variations you can try:
- Bow Scrunchies: Add a little bow to your scrunchie for extra flair. You can sew the bow onto the scrunchie itself or attach it with a removable clip.
- Double Scrunchies: For a statement look, try using two scrunchies at once. You can use complementary fabrics or keep it all one color for a bolder style.
- Scrunchie Headbands: Instead of using the fabric to make a full scrunchie, use it to create a scrunchie headband by making a thinner, stretchy version that you can wear like a headband.
